WHY DO I WRITE FICTION NOVELS?
Having a long history of writing articles for various trade journals, year books and exhibition entries I finally found the time to write adult fiction novels. The Grass Is Not Always Greener is my seventh publication since commencing in year 2010. In chronological publication order they are: The Naked Shadow; Lisa the Unlikely Heroine; Un-Finished Offensive; The Metal Detector; The Wooden Box; The Reluctant Special. These were written under my christened name of Alan Clarke: the Lordship title only being obtained some two years ago.
All of my stories are ‘middle of the road’ adventure tales. I feel that it is important for the reader to feel an attachment and empathy with the main character/s together with believable story lines. Although, having said that, books one and three have a secondary sci-fi element albeit on a low key level with the second one being a sequel. Book number four has a very brief involvement with zombies but they are not the main story line. None of my stories contain graphic sex or violence.
The Grass Is Not Always Greener is, like the previous six tales, largely drawn from life experience. As well as the main thrust of the story there is a strong maternal link between the main characters; a bond that is tested as the story progresses.
On a personal note, I find writing fiction stories a great way of exercising the brain. Apart from book number five; when I pre-empted the chapters before commencing writing; I always start with a blank computer screen, and although with a basic story in mind, I quite often have no idea how the story is going to progress beyond the current chapter. This I find quite exciting as I am as keen as the reader will be in finding out the final outcome. I am my own toughest critic and will not submit a story for publication unless it has passed my severe scrutiny. I hope that readers will agree with my assessment in all cases! Happy reading.
